Volunteer at For Love of Children
"From what we get, we can make a living. What we give,
however, makes a life."
- Arthur Ashe
Hello! Welcome to For Love of Children’s
volunteer page. We are happy that you are interested in working
with Washington, DC’s children, and we need you!
We believe that by extending a helping hand and giving children
and adults the tools they need to succeed, doors to new worlds
will be opened and dreams will become reality. Volunteers go
a long way in helping those dreams come true. According to one
research study*, children who interact regularly with influential,
positive adults are:
46% less likely to begin using illegal drugs
27% less likely to begin drinking alcohol
52% less likely to skip school
33% less likely to hit someone
Volunteers provide an invaluable service to the
children and families of FLOC. Become a partner in change. Teach
a child to dream.
Yes, I would like to volunteer!

- The child to tell everyone else how much fun s/he has
with you
- A healthy dose of fulfillment
- A challenge
- Expect your life to change

Guest Speakers
Our children deserve the chance to learn about opportunities that exist in their own communities. We encourage them to explore their world, and invite guest speakers to help us in that journey. They come from all walks of life, economic and educational backgrounds. Our guest speakers do have one thing in common — a commitment to making the world a better place for children.
- Educational Guidance mentors provide a gentle nudge to inspire youth to understand that the choices they make today can ultimately affect their futures in a positive or a negative way. They also encourage youth to begin to explore post secondary educational opportunities or full-time employment after high school graduation. Contact Kathleen St. Villier at (202) 349-3516 or kstvillier@floc.org to learn more about this opportunity.
Tutoring at the Neighborhood
Tutoring Program

- A FLOC tutor establishes a one-on-one relationship with
a child in Washington, DC, and works with that student in our
proven, back-to-basics curriculum designed to improve reading
and math skills. FLOC’s doors are open for tutoring Tuesday, Wednesday evening; Saturday mornings and afternoons, and tutoring is conducted at
other sites at a variety of times and days each week. Training
and support are available to you at all times along the way.
To learn more, read Become A Tutor or contact
Trinishia Samuels at (202) 349-3512 or ntp@floc.org
to explore this opportunity.
Outdoor Education Center
There are numerous ways to volunteer your time at the Outdoor Education Center.
We need people who love young people who want to spend time supervising youth on
outdoor field trips to the OEC as well as in the DC Metro area. People who are
knowledgeable about the environment and are willing to spend time working with youth
to help pass on their awareness of the world around them or who would like to help
write lesson plans that match academic standards. And, people who are interested in
doing service learning projects with a group or on their own. Please contact Kevin
Hughes at 304-725-0409, khughes@floc.org to explore
this wonderful opportunity.
