A WORD ABOUT THE PROGRAM
Our History
FLOC is proud to begin another successful year of the Neighborhood Tutoring
Program (NTP) and the fifth year of the Neighborhood Teen Tutoring Program
(NTTP) for youth in Shaw. The process began in 1993 when several community
members visited neighbors to determine priority needs for their children.
The program started on a trial basis in the spring of 1995 with 6 tutors
and 6 students. The following fall, NTP expanded to 35 tutors and 35 students.
The next year the program grew to 75 tutors and 75 students. In the last
six school years, FLOC has maintained the Saturday morning program, began
the teen tutoring program, and instituted both after school and in-school
programs serving additional youth in three D.C. Public Schools. During
school year 2001/2002, NTP expanded existing programs and began model-NTP
programs at ten external sites to increase the number of students served.
Our Program and Goals
Our programs consist of a structured, 36-step reading, writing, comprehension
and spelling curriculum. It begins with knowledge of the alphabet, then
reading simple words, reading well, and finally, reading independently.
Our innovative 40-step math program was developed and copyrighted by FLOC
and reintroduces students to basic math skills to bring their math performance
up to grade level. Each program requires 100% mastery of each step before
beginning the next.
The goal is to help youth achieve grade level proficiency in reading
and math. This gives students the reading and math skills needed to do
homework on their own and improve their performance in school. Our goal
is to give our students the necessary skills to become life-long learners
and contributing members of the community.
