The Neighborhood Tutoring Program (NTP) is a unique
and innovative "back to basics" tutoring program which
strives to equip each student with 100% mastery of grade-appropriate
reading and math skills. FLOC's copyrighted curriculum, intensively
trained volunteer tutors, and frequently administered standardized
tests ensure each participant's success.
For every 22 hours of tutoring completed, students in the program:
- increase their math levels
by an average of one year and three months;
- increase their ability to read words fluently by an average
of one year and three months, and
- improve their passage comprehension by one year and two months.
In addition to tutoring at FLOC, NTP's program is offered in
elementary and middle schools in our neighborhood and in non-profit
agencies throughout the city. These partnerships offer the best
way to bring NTP's effective curriculum to the greatest number
of students who need it as quickly as possible.
NTP Founder Christine Young started the program in 1994 after
evaluating other programs for children in the area. "We
started out with six kids and six tutors. In 2002, we served
550 children.
We truly believe that helping a child understand the basics of
reading and math through our back-to-basics approach is the
best
way to learn. Our promotions are based on individual assessments,
and our method ensures that each FLOC tutoring student achieves
100% mastery in one level before progressing to the next. The
extensive training and support that we provide to our tutors
equips
them with the tools they need, and they pass that confidence
and enthusiasm on to our kids."
