DC YOUTH SERVE THEIR COMMUNITY: FOR LOVE OF CHILDREN YOUTH HOST “MINI-OLYMPICS” TO SUPPORT CHILDREN AT HOPE AND A HOME

Washington, D.C. (October 27, 2005) - DC youth at For Love of Children (FLOC) will relay race, run, and jump-rope in the fifth annual FLOC “Mini-Olympics” to raise funds that will benefit children and families at Hope and A Home, a transitional housing agency serving Washington families. The Mini-Olympics will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, October 29 at FLOC's new Columbia Road offices.

For Love of Children is a 40-year-old organization that provides at-risk young people in Washington, DC with a continuum of educational services that prepare them with the skills to become confident, life-long learners and contributing members of their communities.

In 2005, For Love of Children's 30-year-old "Hope and A Home" program incorporated as an independent 501(c)(3) agency and continues its mission of helping low-income families create stable homes and fostering the hope that parents and children need in order to make lasting changes in their lives. For Love of Children and Hope and A Home remain closely linked, however. Children at Hope and A Home participate in FLOC's Neighborhood Tutoring Program, Educational Guidance programs, and the West Virginia-based Outdoor Education Center .

Students and volunteer tutors in FLOC's Saturday Morning Tutoring program created the Mini-Olympics event as a way to participate in the Fannie Mae Foundation's "Help the Homeless" program. The Mini-Olympics is a way for FLOC youth to give back in their community, to raise funds to support the newly independent Hope and A Home, and to have a lot of fun.
