How can I get involved?

We’re glad to learn of your interest in For Love of Children’s Neighborhood Tutoring Program (NTP). Half of the students in our program are performing below grade level in reading, and two thirds are performing below grade level in math. Most of our students live in Shaw neighborhood where 37% of high school students drop out of school, and 41% of the residents have less than a ninth grade education. While 62% of high school students cannot read at basic levels, 91% of students perform below basic levels in math.

With your help, our organization seeks to provide the children in our program with the tools and motivation necessary to escape the cycle of drug abuse, crime, unemployment, and poverty that has afflicted so many in their parents’ generation. The ability to read well, to excel in school, and the desire to learn are prerequisites to breaking this cycle, and we are glad that you want to join us in this effort. For more information about specific programming, please check out our Tutor Job Description and Tutoring Application or contact us at (202) 349-3512.

Our program is scheduled around the academic school calendar. New volunteer tutors are brought into programs in September, at the beginning of the school year, or in late January, at the beginning of the spring semester. Our training and orientations are scheduled accordingly in September and January. In the meantime, please note that FLOC’s programs have expanded, and our need for tutors has grown substantially. You can help us recruit volunteers by telling friends about FLOC. If you have friends who you think may be interested, please have them contact us.

Our highly structured reading and math programs are offered on various days at different times so that even the most hectic schedule should be able to find a program that works. To ensure that tutors are prepared and that students are taught effectively, we provide excellent comprehensive training for all tutors. Our training and our curricula have proven to be very effective. Thanks to the hard work of everyone involved, for every 22 hours of tutoring completed, students in the program:

  • increase their math levels by an average of one year and three months
  • increase their ability to read words fluently by an average of one year and three months
  • improve their passage comprehension by an average of one year and two months

Feel free to view an NTP Tutor Job Description and complete the Tutoring application, which contains a list of programs times and days. You can mail the application or fax it to (202) 349-3520.
