How can I enroll my child?

We’re glad to learn of your interest in For Love of Children’s Neighborhood Tutoring Program (NTP).

Our program is scheduled around the academic school calendar. New students are brought into programs in September, at the beginning of the school year, or in late January, at the beginning of the spring semester. We accept new student applications year round, but because our program is one-on-one, your child may be placed on a waiting list until a tutor can be assigned.

Our highly structured reading and math programs are offered on various days at different times so that even the most hectic schedule should be able to find a program that works. At FLOC’s Columbia Road location, we offer a Saturday Morning program for elementary age students, and a Tuesday evening program for adolescents. We offer other programs in partnership with local schools and community partners. Programs occur in schools, after school, nights and weekends.

To apply for your student to participate in NTP or other FLOC programs, please complete and submit a 2009-2010 Student Application for each student you would like to enroll. We suggest that you print your application(s) prior to submitting them in case there are any issues in the transmission process. If you have questions, please call (202) 349-3512.

To ensure that tutors are prepared and that students are taught effectively, we provide excellent comprehensive training for all tutors. Our training and our curriculum have proven to be very effective. Thanks to the hard work of everyone involved, for every 22 hours of tutoring completed, students in the program:

  • increase their math levels by an average of one year and three months;
  • increase their ability to read words fluently by an average of one year and three months, and
  • improve their passage comprehension by an average of one year and two months.

To reserve a spot for your student in the Neighborhood Tutoring Program, you must do the following:

  • Complete and submit Student Application (one for each student, with ALL questions answered)
  • Submit your student’s most recent Report Card
  • Submit your student’s most recent Stanford-9 scores
  • Attend a Parent and Student Orientation Session (required for ALL families)
To sign-up for a Parent and Student Orientation Session, please contact Amber Shollenberger, Recruitment Coordinator at (202) 349-3512 or via e-mail at ashollenberger@floc.org.

NTP staff will notify you when we receive your child’s registration package and let you know about your child’s status on the waitlist.
