The Neighborhood Tutoring Program

Our Neighborhood Tutoring Program (NTP) is currently recruiting five qualified full-time AmeriCorps *VISTA Site Coordinators. AmeriCorps*VISTA Members receive a subsistence allowance of approximately $11,388.00 for the entire year, paid in bi-weekly paychecks. Additionally, AmeriCorps*VISTA Members also can choose between a stipend at the end of the year that accrues at a rate of $100.00 per month ($1200.00 after a full year) or an education award which totals $4,725.00, receive full health insurance coverage, and a transportation stipend.

POSITION TITLE: AMERICORPS *VISTA- NEIGHBORHOOD TUTORING PROGRAM

REPORTS TO: MANAGER, NEIGHBORHOOD TUTORING PROGRAM
YOUTH DEVELOPMENT DIVISION

DIVISION: Youth Development

This position description incorporates the core responsibilities of the job. It is recognized that other related duties not specifically mentioned might also be performed, and that not all responsibilities may be carried out depending on operational needs.

POSITION PURPOSE: Under the supervision of the Manager of the Neighborhood Tutoring Program (NTP), the AmeriCorps *VISTA will work in a team approach with FLOC professional staff.

The tutoring program strives to help elementary and adolescent-age students achieve grade level competency in reading and arithmetic, and gives them the skills to be a life long learner. All tutoring programs are based on a structured, reading, writing, spelling, grammar, vocabulary and comprehension and “back to basics” math curricula. Special evaluation tools are used to assess each student’s progress and ensure 100% mastery before beginning the next step.

PRINCIPLE ACCOUNTABILITIES: Site Coordinators are responsible for overall supervision, assessment, quality control, and training of a designated site. The AmeriCorps *VISTA will serve as a site coordinator for two of NTP’s sites. On-site supervision duties and off-site administrative duties are summarized below.

Principle Accountabilities: By ensuring that students are provided with tutors who are skilled in the curricula and prepared to make a difference in a child's academic life, the AmeriCorps *VISTA will make it possible for NTP to reach out to students in educational crisis. The *VISTA will take on the role of a Site Coordinator, be responsible for one of the five special projects listed below, and assist with volunteer recruitment. Specific duties are as follows.

  • Conduct new student/parent and tutor orientations
  • Develop comprehensive tutor recruitment strategy
  • Assist with interviewing and hiring of tutors
  • Develop and lead tutor training sessions
  • Communicate with parents, schools and FLOC staff
  • Coordinate testers and supervise testing
  • Coordinate and lead group sessions
  • Oversee tutor sessions to assess progress and trouble spots
  • Review and develop lesson plans
  • Coordinate trainings, reflections, parent meetings and special events
  • Analyze assessment data and complete mid-year and final assessment reports
  • Recommend special assessments for students as needed

Special Projects: *VISTAs will design and implement one of the following projects:

  1. Tutor Appreciation--Assist the Recruitment Program Coordinator in developing innovative ways to acknowledge the contributions of FLOC's volunteers.
  2. Student Recruitment--Build systematic approach to increasing student enrollment, which includes developing partnerships with schools and community organizations throughout D.C. and creating opportunities to increase stakeholder engagement.
  3. Signature Events--Orchestrate and enhance, with staff support, three annual FLOC events: .Recognition Event, Earth Day Celebration, and Book Festival. These events celebrate stakeholder dedication to FLOC, strengthen existing community ties, and introduce new supporters to the organization.
  4. Behavior Management Support--Create and implement a system of positive behavior reinforcement for students in FLOC programs to increase student retention.
  5. Qualitative Research (collateral pieces)--Work with curricula coordinators to create a framework to facilitate the documentation of student work and achievements.
