FLOC's College Guidance and the Fred Taylor Scholarship

Educational Guidance

Educational Advocacy and Guidance supports young people in all FLOC programs through activities that create stronger bonds between our organization and their families, their schools, and their community.  Students, 15-22 years of age, who formerly participated in FLOC programs, are also offered practical help in selecting high school courses, preparing for the SAT, visiting and choosing colleges, completing college applications, and locating and applying for financial assistance as they plan for postsecondary educational opportunities.  This college prep initiative will serve 45 students in school year 2006-07; 95% of our seniors will apply and be accepted by post-secondary education institutions.

The college prep initiative accomplishes this by educating groups of high school students on the college application and selection process through year long series of workshops that help them understand the process, then guides them through the post-secondary admissions systems in their senior year.  Students, typically first generation college students, learn about the language of admissions as well as the steps they can take to prepare for a successful transition.  High school seniors are given a support system that will push them to successfully complete the admissions process, as well as assist them in securing the critical financial assistance through scholarships and general aid.  Current college students are given periodic individual support as they renew financial aid, choose majors, schedule classes, or make general decisions that affect their post-secondary experience.  We exist as a support system for the students we’ve guided towards their continued education.  Students are given every opportunity to find the right opportunity for their life, and they are given the support to recognize the talent in themselves to set high expectations and strive to reach those goals.

For Love of Children is currently providing weekly workshops for 15 high school juniors, weekly workshops and individual case management for 19 high school seniors, and continues to aid and support 38 students enrolled in post-secondary education institutions.  We will be piloting a weekly workshop for 15 sophomore students this spring.

Fred Taylor Scholarship

The Fred Taylor Scholarship Fund helps make college or vocational school a reality for students participating in For Love of Children’s programs.  Founded in 1999, this fund provides need-based scholarships to eligible students who are pursuing college degrees or vocational certifications.  Fred Taylor, founder of FLOC and longtime advocate of equal educational opportunities, envisioned a world in which all students who had the drive to succeed in obtaining a postsecondary education could, regardless of financial restrictions.  This fund, established in his honors, helps students accomplish just that.
