Children who grow up amidst poverty are at the highest risk for drug
abuse, teen pregnancy, and juvenile crime. These children never experience
the hope that leads to dreams.
For Love of Children introduces at-risk children to
opportunity, possibility, and challenge. FLOC opens doors to the world
beyond the restricted environment in which they live, and teaches young
people that they have the opportunity and the capability to live within
that larger world.
For Love of Children’s Outdoor Education Center
facilitates healthy character development for youth and adults through
adventure challenges, environmental education, and
sustainability practices in a powerful outdoor classroom where experiential
learning inspires individual potential and leads participants toward
discovering connections between the natural world and their communities.
“Experiential education is a great way for a child who is facing seemingly
insurmountable odds to learn important lessons and apply that learning to their
lives outside of FLOC. By conquering the challenges we introduce for them, FLOC
kids often learn to overcome self-imposed perceptions of their capabilities to
succeed.”
-- Nancy Van Scoyoc, Director and long-time FLOC Outdoors volunteer
FLOC's OEC is based in wild and wonderful West Virginia just 65 miles from our Nation's Capital. The site is on 350 acres nestled below the Appalachian Trail and above the Shenandoah River, just a short distance from historic Harper's Ferry. Through our programming, we teach individual and group leadership skills, team building and environmental education. The OEC provides custom designed, client focused programming consisting of 1-day to multi-day learning experiences, year round. Leaders in the Making
Leaders in the Making is a weekly after-school workshop for 10- to
14-year-old students that focuses on the environment, teamwork, leadership,
community service, and reading and writing skills. Students who
are grade-level competent in reading will participate in enrichment
and experiential activities designed to encourage them to become life-long
learners.
Through community service projects and time spent at the Outdoor Education
Center, students will improve their understanding of how urban and rural
environments are interconnected; will learn about scientific processes
in the natural world; and will discover positive ways in which their
actions can impact their immediate and global environment. Throughout
the year, students will have experiences that promote growth and success. Equally,
they will strive towards becoming productive and effective leaders among
their peers and in their communities. The reading comprehension
and writing component of our program will teach students to increase
their reading and writing skills, as well as foster a love for both.
Each month focuses on a different theme, which is then explored during
a four-week period in a variety of ways, including in-class discussions,
field trips, guest speakers, and group projects.
Through team-building exercises, group discussions about
the community, as well as community service projects, our Leaders learn
to take positive risks in their lives, gain a greater sense of self,
and improve their interpersonal skills.
